He probably didn't want to have to buy another one; being that they are expensive and he's a Public TV employee (i.e. not rolling in dough). Perhaps he had a ton of important crap on his laptop, like most people do (who use it for work). At the end of the day, assuming he did it because he's materialistic is just that.....assuming.
